This Is Jay Kay's Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. He's Had It Resprayed Purple. Of Course He Has.

Jay Kay, frontman of Jamiroquai, owner of somewhere approaching 100 cars over his lifetime, one of the most serious and eccentric petrolheads in British music, has a signature. Not just the hats. The colour. Purple has followed Jay Kay through four decades of car ownership: the purple Lamborghini Diablo SE30 from the Cosmic Girl music video. He recently resprayed his Ferrari F355 GTS in Viola SE30, a Lamborghini purple, applied to a Ferrari, because why not. And now this, a Gallardo V10 Manual Spyder, resprayed purple, grilles refinished in chrome, wearing two-tone grey and silver wheels that look like no other Gallardo in existence.

It is unmistakably his. And that, in investment terms, is the point.

The Investment Case Without Jay Kay

Before getting to the provenance, the Gallardo manual Spyder stands as a strong investment proposition on its own merits in 2026. The numbers are straightforward.

In 2021, a Gallardo Spyder with a manual gearbox could be bought for approximately £80,000. Today, a well-maintained manual example is worth over £170,000. That is more than double in five years , driven entirely by the structural shift that has been playing out across the Gallardo market as buyers begin to understand what the manual transmission represents in a world where no new Lamborghini offers one.

The Huracán that replaced the Gallardo in 2014 was never offered with a manual. The Temerario that replaced the Huracán is turbocharged, hybridised, and automatic only. The last Lamborghini you could buy new with a gated six-speed manual gearbox was the Gallardo LP560-2 50th Anniversario in 2013. When that car was built, the manual Lamborghini era ended, permanently.

The Gallardo Spyder in manual specification occupies an even more specific position within that story: the manual gearbox in the open-top form of the last naturally aspirated manual Lamborghini. The combination of V10, six-speed manual, convertible roof, and all-wheel drive is a configuration that Lamborghini will never produce again. The collector market has begun to understand this with clarity. A manual Gallardo Spyder sold in September 2026 for $265,000. The market is moving.

The new Lamborghini Revuelto, Lamborghini's current flagship car, starts at over £400,000. More than double what a manual Gallardo Spyder costs today. The Temerario, Lamborghini's new mid-engined supercar, starts at similar money. Both are turbocharged. Both are hybrid. Neither has a manual gearbox. For a buyer who wants a naturally aspirated V10 manual Lamborghini convertible, there is only one option left: the Gallardo Spyder. And there are not many left in manual specification.

The Provenance With Jay Kay

Jay Kay's ownership adds something that cannot be manufactured or replicated after the fact. It adds a story.

Jay Kay is one of the most recognised names in British car collecting. His collection, which has at various points included a Ferrari Enzo, a Lamborghini Miura SV, a Porsche Carrera GT, a Lamborghini Diablo SE30, multiple classic Mercedes and BMWs, and an Aston Martin DB5, represents decades of serious collecting by someone with genuine knowledge and genuine passion. He has appeared four times on Top Gear. He has sold cars at auction at Silverstone Auctions where the Jay Kay provenance added meaningful premiums over non-celebrity comparable examples. His name is associated with purple Lamborghinis specifically and inextricably, the Diablo SE30, the Cosmic Girl video, and now this.

The Gallardo Spyder in question is purple, with chrome grille details and two-tone grey and silver wheels. It looks like no other Gallardo in the world. It is recognisable as Jay Kay's in a photograph. That visual identity, combined with documented ownership history, is exactly the kind of provenance that the collector car market rewards with permanent premiums over standard examples.

On Modifications: The Important Caveat

The general rule on investment cars is firm: do not modify them from factory specification. The premium commanded by original, matching-numbers, unmodified examples is consistently documented across every collector market. A standard-colour, unmodified manual Gallardo Spyder commands more than a modified one with unknown provenance.

Jay Kay's car is an exception to that rule, and the exception is instructive about why the rule exists.

The rule exists because modifications, absent provenance, reduce the pool of future buyers by moving the car away from factory standard. The buyer who wants an unmodified Gallardo Spyder will not want a modified one. Modifications therefore typically reduce value.

Jay Kay's modifications , purple respray, chrome grilles, two-tone wheels, would reduce value on an anonymous Gallardo Spyder. On this specific car, they do the opposite. The modifications are inseparable from the provenance. The car is purple because Jay Kay owns it. The chrome grilles are his choice. The two-tone wheels are the visual signature of a specific, documented owner. The modifications are the provenance. A future buyer of this car is not buying a modified Gallardo Spyder at a discount. They are buying Jay Kay's purple Gallardo Spyder, a car with a face, a story, and a character that no unmodified example can claim.

The lesson is not that modifications add value. They don't, without the story. The lesson is that documented celebrity ownership and a unique, recognisable specification, together, create an asset that transcends the standard market. This car will not be compared to other Gallardo Spyders. It will be compared to nothing, because there is nothing to compare it to.

Don't buy the wrong cars. I've spent a significant amount of time putting together a non-generic list of the 100 best investment cars to buy in 2026,  under-appreciated, last of their kind, and where the market of buyers is growing.
